Details:
On June 11, 1998, Jonathan, an off-duty Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy and dog handler for the department's Special Enforcement Bureau didn't return from a routine daylong hiking trip. He was to begin hiking at the Devils Punchbowl Park in the San Gabriel Mountains. His SUV was found parked just outside the park's entrance, but Jonathan was nowhere to be found. Jon is described as an experienced hiker, marathoner, outdoorsman, and survivalist who is very familiar with the area.
More than 100 deputies and volunteers searched the San Gabriel Mountains by helicopter, tracking dogs, and high-tech military surveillance gear with no results.
At one time, tipsters said Jon had been killed after he came across a meth lab, but that tip was deemed unreliable.
